Lil-One

Doll by Tove Edens
from... Ontario, Canada

This sweet baby is incredibly cuddly and just melts in your hands. She is perfect for a toddler's nurturing imagination play since there are no joints or parts that could potentially break off.

This baby is based on the Waldorf doll pattern called "Floppy Baby" by Lali Doll Nursery, she is a weighted 12" doll with incredible cuddle power.

Lil-One's head is made in the classic Waldorf style using sheep's wool. The facial features (cheeks, nose, chin and lips) are needle felted and finally, the cotton knit 'skin' is pulled over the head. Her hair is a little rectangle of Icelandic sheep's wool trimmed to suit the face.

The little body is stuffed softly with sheep's wool and the bottom is weighted with glass sand which gives this baby an incredible ability to cuddle into one's hands.

Lil-One's shirt is designed to fit a 1 ½ lb baby and is from my own collection of preemie garments

Avy

Doll by Al Goulet
from... Worcester, MA

My name is Avy. I'm a girl I think. I'm an adaptation from an original design by Susan Barmore ( AKA "Frowning Francis" ) I'm 8 inches tall, small for my age. I was tired of my pacifier so when mommy wasn't looking I got into her stash. Oh what fun... washer here, felt there, paint under there, some Tyvek there, and some here. Oh oh... Mommy caught me. But she's NOT mad. She sat me in a pose, took a picture. and used me for her Steampunk Baby model.

I'm made from Muslin, Tyvek, Paint and paper clay... and that dreaded word... GLUE... yuck.. tastes terrible

Nighty night...

Vanessa, Giver of Butterfly Kisses

Doll by Mary Ellen Osnes
from... Valentine, NE

Vanessa's sweet spirit is as soft and gentle as a butterfly's kiss. Her Waldorf-inspired head, face and hair are my original design. Vanessa's face is needle felted wool, covered with 100% cotton knit. I embroidered her eyes and mouth, using 100% cotton floss and crocheted her honey-blonde hair using Wild Brushable Mohair yarn. Vanessa's body is a variation of Estelle Ansley Worrell's 15" Baby Doll, from Dolls, Puppedolls, and Teddy Bears, copyright, 1977.

She is stuffed and weighted with polyester fill. Her hinged arms and legs make Vanessa easy to hold and cuddle. I sewed Vanessa's T-shirt and butterfly jumper using Yes! It's Easy See & Sew pattern B5944. Her shoes are crocheted from cotton yarn, using a variation of Carol Ballard's (Cobbler's Cabin) Mary Jane shoe pattern. The crocheted butterfly embellishments are a variation of Jamie's Butterfly from crochetdynamite.com.

Annabel

Doll by Kath Jeffries
from... United Kingdom

This is Annabel & she is 10 months old. I used flesh coloured stretch scuba fabric for Annabel's body & head. I used my old faithful Judi Ward pattern for a basic doll for the body but enlarged it. The head is of my own design.

Annabel is 23" long. The curly hair was achieved by wrapping knitting Yarn around wooden dowelling, immersing it in boiling water & then baking in the oven for 1 hour at a low temperature. The "hair" is unwrapped when cool & forms ringlets. This was then hand sewn & glued to her head. Her face is painted on freehand with fabric paint & fineliners & blusher. Annabels dress & hairband are my own design & made from Polycotton. She has purchased baby socks & disposable nappy & her toy dog & baby buggy are also purchased. I hope you like her?

VILDE

Doll by Joyce Hendriksen
from... Norway

Material: knit polyester "Dollskin"

Thread: Superior Threads/the Bottom Line/60 wt. polyester (very thin and very strong)

Designer : Ute Vasina

For many years, I have admired Ute Vasina's troll dolls and bought a few patterns. I finally completed the TROLL BABY. I thought it would be easier to make something small. But it was a difficult challenge as finished size is 2.5 inches. I made the body and head parts, then decided the head was too small. I enlarged the pattern a bit and tried again. NO, too large. After I attached the original sized head, I was satisfied with the proportions. As with many projects "TRIAL AND ERROR" is an important process. There is another doll designer who saves all the heads she is not satisfied with, and uses them for painting or other practice. So I am inspired to try more than once to make a part I am satisfied with. Coloring is done with colored pencils and Pigma Micron pens.

The bird's nest is woven from fresh-cut long twigs from Hanging Birch trees, into an irregular basket. The soft bedding is thread reclaimed from washing quilt cloth pieces.

Sweet Cheeks

Doll by Diane R Smith
from... Anniston, AL

This is Sweet Cheeks made from a kit that I got from Magic Cabin in 2006. Yes it took me that long to get the courage to get started. Sweet Cheeks is made of cotton knit and stuffed with wool. It took me about 2 hrs to make the head, after that the rest was easy.

I used the freezer paper method to sew the legs, arms and body and the button jointing method, both learned from Judy Ward's class, Cloth Dollmaking for Everyone. The wig was crocheted using mohair yarn in a curly style. Eyes were embroidered in blue. She was blushed to give her a healthy blush.

A bubble suit was made for Sweet Cheeks using a waffle weave fabric in light blue and white linen for the collar , the outfit was homemade, the pattern made for this doll a copy of a real baby suit. She also is wearing hand crocheted socks and real baby shoes.

In her arms a mini Waldorf type doll made for her, wearing a tiny heirloom dress from a pattern by scientific seamstress.

This doll is 22" and she was made with Judi Ward's Turnip Truck Tots Doll Pattern with craft velour.

Rebecca has a cute and chubby build. Her hands, feet, tummy, and bottom is needle sculpted. She can sit all by herself like a six month old baby. Her face is hand painted with more needle sculpture to highlight her face. An artist pencils was used for the eyebrows and eyelashes. The pigtails are made up of yarn that has been hand seen one strand at a time. Finally her outfit and shoes are brought babies clothes and shoes discount store.

This doll is special because she is the first doll I've made in six months. She is a reminder I what I loved about sewing and self expression.
